THIS FABRIC DESIGN IS INSPIRED BY THE ZAZZAU PALACE GATE OF THE ZAZZAU EMIRATE OF NORTHERN NIGERIA.

Located in the old part of Zaria, known as Birnin Zazzau (walled city of Zaria) or Zaria City, the gate (kofar gida) to the Emir’s palace stands out as a colorful representation of the Hausa people and their ruler. The decorative designs on the façade reflect the stylistic characteristics of many Hausa buildings and art objects, and the gate itself is known throughout the region as an important cultural structure.

Zazzau, also known as the Zaria Emirate /Zegzeg is a historic kingdom, traditional emirate, and local government council in Kaduna State, northern Nigeria, with its headquarters at Zaria city. The most important source for the early history of Zazau is a chronicle composed in the early 20th century from oral tradition. It tells the traditional story of the foundation of the Hausa kingdoms by Bayajidda, a culture hero and gives a list of rulers, along with the length of their reigns. Zazzau’s most famous early ruler was Queen (or princess) Amina.
